Because we store our emotions in our body and not in our brain, rapid, free-form
physical movement helps unleash trapped emotions and frees us from stress and
tension. Unstructured movement releases a flood of hormones into our
bloodstream that infuse us with positive feelings. (Structured movement, such as
cycling, running, and swimming, releases these hormones as well, but in much
smaller quantities.) Primal, unstructured movement (such as when you cheer
your favourite team scoring a goal or dance wildly at a party) are more beneficial
ways of releasing tension from the body.
