Stage 1 – Journey of Discovery

Stage 1 - Journey of Discovery

The Blueprint for Change

“Life can only be understood backward, but it must be lived forward.”
–Soren Kierkegaard

In Stage 1, we take stock of the current environment that surrounds you in terms of four key elements that impact you and your ecosystem.

YOUR NATURE

Your nature is who you are in the authentic sense. We begin with exploring your nature from a 360-degree perspective, to evaluate your alignment of nature and nurture.

YOUR INSTINCT

Your instinct is made up of your impulses and innate responses. Review how well you recognize this powerful mechanism and explore the differences between instinct and insight.

YOUR IMPACT

Your impact is the influence you exert. We review your efforts and effects, and re-form your behaviors in response to this changing world and the outcomes you seek.

YOUR CULTURE

Your culture is the “ecosystem” of habits, reactions, and actions you exchange with the world and everyone around you. In this element, we gain feedback on your culture so you can more effectively self-develop.

Outcomes

How this stage will support your growth and self-development:

  1. Clearly understand the landscape of your life today.
  2. Recognise which behaviour patterns support you and which hold you back.
  3. Re-form any mental models that are not currently serving you.
  4. Develop a clear vision of what you will achieve at the end of your LIONS journey.

What To Expect

When we talk about your culture, we’ll use a diagram called the Relationship Onion to examine the different layers of relationships in your life. On the innermost layer of the Onion, you’ll find your Circle of Intimacy (which is made up of your partner, immediate family, and close friends), while on the outermost layer you’ll find individuals with whom you have surface-level interactions. By examining these layers, you’ll gain new insight into the nuances of your ecosystem and learn how and why you may need to make changes to some of your layers.

You’ll also use a diagram called the Personality Onion to reflect on your relationship with yourself. In this Onion, the outer layers represent the parts of yourself you present to the world, while the inner layers reflect your hidden, private self. By examining your Personality Onion, you’ll gain clarity on how much of your true self you feel comfortable expressing in your outer world, and we’ll discuss whether you need to make adjustments to how some of your “layers” function.

Your Input

As part of Stage 1, you’ll complete surveys designed to reveal more about your nature, instinct, impact, and culture. However, since our goal is to obtain a 360° picture of you and your habits, we won’t rely on your survey responses alone; we’ll also enlist the feedback of four key people in your Circle of Intimacy to clarify how others perceive you and how you influence those in your ecosystem.

As your LIONS journey continues, we’ll return regularly to the 360° of Influence Survey in order to see how your impact and influence are changing over time.

By the end of Stage 1, you’ll have a clear vision of what you want to achieve on your LIONS journey as well as the internal roadblocks you may need to dissolve to take your relationships, career, and legacy to the next level.

Overview: Journey of discovery

Here are the questions to reflect on during your journey of discovery:

  1. What am I doing that disturbs me?
  2. What am I not paying attention to?
  3. What am I not hearing?

In your journal, please write a paragraph or jot down bullet points in response to each question.

Only respond to the questions you feel able to answer. If there are any questions you feel stuck on, leave them for now and we can discuss them in our next session.

The hidden parts of the self

The psychological concepts of the ego and the id, the conscious mind and the subconscious mind, are extremely valuable in helping you clear any subliminal blocks that may be holding you back.

For example, it’s important to differentiate between your ego (your mental concept of your identity based on your life experiences up to this point) and your “self” (who you truly are).

Many of us have trouble tapping into our true selves because the voice of our ego has become too loud. When the voice of the ego directs our lives, it can be hard for us to hear the voice of the self, which speaks to us not with words and logic but with feelings.

It’s important to stay in close contact with our true selves, because our true selves connect us to the energy that lives within us, as well as the energy of those around us. When we are in touch with our true selves, we communicate and lead from a place of great power. As many of the greatest leaders in our history have realised, the most powerful influence comes from expressing the voice of the self.

Your shadow

Another concept we will touch on in Stage 1 is the shadow (which is the name Carl Jung gave to the “dark side” that all individuals possess). Understanding our shadow is particularly important for our growth because if we do not recognise it, it continually holds us back.

Our shadow, which represents our deepest fears and the hidden parts of our personality, must be brought into the light in order for us to become authentic and whole. Otherwise, that hidden part will always exert its control over our actions and attitudes, without us even realising it. Our influence will become limited, since people can sense when their leaders are inauthentic. However, once we have confronted our shadow, our influence will expand as others sense our sincerity and reward it with respect and loyalty.

Stage 1 will help you recognise and work with hidden parts of yourself so you can incorporate them and move past limiting beliefs about who you really are.
