Stage 5- The Metaphysical Gut
Stage 5 - The Metaphysical Gut
The Body's "Second Brain"
“A gut feeling is actually every cell in your body making a decision.”
–Deepak Chopra
Your Well-Being
In this stage, we’ll examine the essential function that your gut plays in influencing your well-being on all four levels: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.
INTUITION
Learn how the gut can be a surprisingly accurate source of information to use in decision-making.
TRUTH
Examine how the truths in your subconscious help you become a more authentic and assured leader.
MOOD
Understand how what you eat plays a prominent role in determining your emotions and mood.
“It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.”
– Oriah
On the physical level, the microbes in your intestines play a vital role in determining your mood, energy level, cognitive function, and overall wellness. Thus, the choices you make about diet have a powerful ability to affect your stress levels, emotions, and mental processing. And the same concept works in reverse—when your stress levels and emotional balance are awry, the delicate balance of bacteria in your gut becomes disrupted.
Since the physical health of our gut is so interconnected with the other parts of our well-being, we can greatly empower ourselves by taking charge of the lifestyle choices that impact it. Improving our choices around what we consume has an outsized effect on all other aspects of our well-being.

WHAT TO EXPECT
After illuminating the importance of our physical gut, we’ll then turn our attention to the metaphysical gut. As the source of your intuition, your metaphysical gut has the ability to give you a deep and clear picture of your environment and how to respond to it. Although “intuition” is often treated with scepticism in the Western world, it is actually a sophisticated form of information processing that takes place on a subconscious level in your body.
By learning to rely more on your metaphysical gut, you’ll access a new kind of gut-level “thinking” that is lightning-fast, automatic, and attuned to your authentic self.
By the time you’ve completed Stage 5, you will have mastered three key elements related to the gut: intuition, truth, and mood.
“I RELY FAR MORE ON GUT INSTINCT THAN RESEARCHING HUGE AMOUNTS OF STATISTICS.”
–SIR RICHARD BRANSON
Overview: THE METAPHYSICAL GUT
Our “gut instinct” is the knowledge and experience that we store not in our brains but in our bodies—specifically, in our intestinal cells. These cells are linked directly to the brain by our nervous system, and we can access their wisdom at any time. However, for those of us who are extremely skilled at logical and rational thinking, it can sometimes feel foreign to rely on something as abstract as “intuitive knowing.”
However, when we learn to rely on our intuition, we can confidently make bigger, bolder decisions and calculated risks. We feel empowered to strike out in different directions from the rest of the pack, and we inspire others to follow us as we do so.
Three of the most successful corporate leaders in recent times—Bill Gates, Sir Richard Branson, and Warren Buffett—all attribute their remarkable success to their ability to trust their instincts enough to act on them, even when everyone else is headed a different way.
YOUR PRE-AWARENESS
Intuition occurs when your brain and body register new information that hasn’t quite reached your conscious awareness. It’s a form of “pre-awareness” that provides us with very valid information.
For instance, suppose you’re driving down the road and you brake suddenly, narrowly missing a truck barrelling through the intersection ahead of you. You’re not sure how you knew that the intersection would be dangerous.
However, on a subconscious level, your brain had picked up on several small signals (the roar of the truck’s approach, the fact that the driver next to you had started to brake just before you did) that contributed to your response. Although this “thinking” happened below the level of conscious awareness, it still gave you incredibly important information on how to act.
YOUR GUT
Unlike logical thinking, intuitive thinking is lightning-fast and occurs below the level of conscious awareness. Although this type of thinking feels less rational to us, the truth is that it often provides us with crucial information that our analytical brains cannot provide.
That is why, in this fifth stage, we’ll focus on the three key elements of our gut:
- Intuition: the “inner knowing” we feel as subconscious awareness.
- Truth: visceral feeling, our authentic self.
- Mood: a state of being that is largely influenced by the health of our gut.
“Management is doing things right. Leadership is doing the right things.”
–Peter Drucker
Leading through Body Wisdom
The focus of this stage is learning to lead by using the knowledge stored in your body as well as your brain. You can do this by tapping into the metaphysical data that your body stores within its physical cells, particularly within the gut.
Our metaphysical “gut” contains information related to our awareness of who we truly are: our authentic self. Through learning to rely on our “gut instinct,” we can learn to make decisions and take actions that align with our true values and goals.
To maintain a healthy metaphysical gut, it’s crucial that we take care of our intestinal health—through informed choices about what we eat and drink.
The key here is that all of these choices are in your hands. By cultivating a healthy gut, you make an exponential positive impact on other areas of your health and well-being.
