There are two skills that most human beings are unfortunately not very adept at: the skill of saying “sorry” and the skill of saying “thank you.” Both of these skills are tremendously important to leaders in particular because they help us develop empathy for others and solidify the connections in our ecosystem.
In the Sorry and Thank You Ceremony, you will practice putting these skills into action until you become completely comfortable with them. First, you’ll take part in a neuroscience-based coaching conversation to help you realise who in your life you would like to say “sorry” or “thank you” to. You’ll then draw up a list of people to whom you believe you owe either of these statements. You’ll then take part in two meaningful rituals to help you communicate your feelings to these individuals.
For the Thank You ritual, you will devise a thoughtful gift for the person (or people) on your list. To do so, you must make close observations about who this person is and intuit what they would enjoy, rather than giving them a gift that you would like to receive. This ritual helps build your empathy and connects you to the needs of other people.
The Sorry ritual involves you making a sincere and humble apology to another person. One of the most profound parts of our humanity is our ability to learn compassion and make repairs with others, so taking part in this ritual will help you develop a difficult but extremely important skill.
With the Sorry and Thank You Ceremony, you practice putting into action what is already in existence in your heart, and the result is stronger, deeper connections with those around you.
We will begin discussing the Sorry and Thank You rituals in Stage 3 of the LIONS program, but you will not actually implement the ritual until Stage 6. In the time between Stage 3 and Stage 6 of the program, you will reflect on and plan for these rituals, supported and facilitated by our coaching. During our sessions together, we will help you develop rituals that lead to the most impactful outcomes and ensure that the experience is meaningful and positive for everyone involved.

These six principles of influence were developed by psychologist Robert Cialdini. They work effectively in conjunction with the 16 leadership qualities of influence.

1. Reciprocity |
When you do something good for others, you inspire in them a desire to do the same for you. |
|
2. Consistency |
When what you do is congruent with what you say, you radiate authenticity and reliability. |

When others are deciding what to do, they look to their peers—so establishing the buy-in of one person is hugely influential in terms of getting a whole team to back your cause. |

4. Liking |

|
5. Authority |

Here we will work on finalising your Influence Statement and create a SMART goal to support it.
The leaders of old were used to issuing orders—however, in today’s world, that approach doesn’t work nearly as well as guiding someone to discover a solution for themself.
As part of examining your powers of influence, we’ll look at some questions that will become crucial in adapting your leadership style.
Questions to ask others:
• “What can I do to help you be more effective?”
• “What can I do to make your life easier?”
• “What is most energising about your work?”
• “Are we fully utilising your talents?”
• “What needs to happen to get this done?”
• “What can I do differently to assist you?”
• “What needs to change?
• “What would make it possible?”
• “I hear your complaint. What is your request?”
• “What do you think?” followed by “What else?”
Questions to ask yourself:
• “How can I leverage my power for the sake of the other people in the room?”
• “Who needs to be encouraged?”
• “How well do I know the people who work for me?”
• “Is it because they don’t want to? Or is it because they don’t know how?”
• “What do I need to start doing?”
• “What do I need to stop doing?
• “What am I doing to develop leaders?”

Re-read and remind yourself of your poison locators.
Daily exercise (5–10 minutes)
• Sit in a quiet place. Get comfortable.
• Take two deep breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth.
• Close your eyes.
• Take two more deep breaths. Focus on letting all the tension in your body float away.
• Smile, not just with your mouth, but with your closed eyes too.
• Feel yourself be at peace, yet powerful. Feel blissful and calm.
• Now picture meeting the very best version of yourself at a party. This is the you who has tapped into all their inner strength and potential, the you who is the “ultimate leader.” But you are more than just a leader. You are a conductor of positive energy and influence.
• How do you look? How much energy do you have? How vibrant are you?
• What are you wearing? How are others reacting to you?
• See the charisma and confidence shining out of your eyes, out of your whole body.
• See the positive impact you have on everyone who comes near you.
• See how everyone wants to meet you, to discover who you are, to be near your energy.
• This is the extraordinary leader you know you can be.
• As you look at yourself, realise instinctively what changes you need to make so
that you can become this new version of yourself.
When you have finished, write down on a card the one change that you can make today that will take you closer towards being that person you just met. Stick this card on your bathroom mirror. Look at it every morning and evening, and put all your energy into making that one change.
Keep up this routine until you have realised that change. Then, you’ll repeat the process for the next change you want to make, using the same technique.
