There are two skills that most human beings are unfortunately not very adept at: the skill of saying “sorry” and the skill of saying “thank you.” Both of these skills are tremendously important to leaders in particular because they help us develop empathy for others and solidify the connections in our ecosystem.
In the Sorry and Thank You Ceremony, you will practice putting these skills into action until you become completely comfortable with them. First, you’ll take part in a neuroscience-based coaching conversation to help you realise who in your life you would like to say “sorry” or “thank you” to. You’ll then draw up a list of people to whom you believe you owe either of these statements. You’ll then take part in two meaningful rituals to help you communicate your feelings to these individuals.
For the Thank You ritual, you will devise a thoughtful gift for the person (or people) on your list. To do so, you must make close observations about who this person is and intuit what they would enjoy, rather than giving them a gift that you would like to receive. This ritual helps build your empathy and connects you to the needs of other people.
The Sorry ritual involves you making a sincere and humble apology to another person. One of the most profound parts of our humanity is our ability to learn compassion and make repairs with others, so taking part in this ritual will help you develop a difficult but extremely important skill.
With the Sorry and Thank You Ceremony, you practice putting into action what is already in existence in your heart, and the result is stronger, deeper connections with those around you.
We will begin discussing the Sorry and Thank You rituals in Stage 3 of the LIONS program, but you will not actually implement the ritual until Stage 6. In the time between Stage 3 and Stage 6 of the program, you will reflect on and plan for these rituals, supported and facilitated by our coaching. During our sessions together, we will help you develop rituals that lead to the most impactful outcomes and ensure that the experience is meaningful and positive for everyone involved.
