Building Presence
Building “presence” through repetition and practice to rewire the pathways in your brain
ELEMENT 6.5: BUILDING PRESENCE
“Always be a first-rate version of yourself, rather than a second-rate version of someone else.”
–Judy Garland
YOUR PRESENCE
Building strong presence as a leader is vital, especially if you want to have a greater impact in motivating others to take the right actions. All aspects of your self—including your physical self, your intellect, your voice, and your emotions—affect your presence.
“Presence” isn’t a performance; instead, it requires you to be authentic. That is why you have already learned how to look deep within and become confident so you can outwardly portray the core of what you know to be true. The next step is to become more comfortable with your own vulnerability. Being vulnerable will allow you to move people in ways that mean they will always remember you and listen to your message.
Ensure that you continue to enhance your presence with these six tips:
- Speak authentically, and pay attention to your posture, tone of voice, and mood.
- Show up completely by being fully present; engage your mind, body, and emotions.
- Be curious when listening, and find the story in everything.
- Lead with what you care about.
- Role-play and practise.
- Breathe, smile, and stay open.
