Presence Role Play
Use role play to embody your presence and control energetic vibrations
ELEMENT 9.3: PRESENCE ROLE PLAY
“True genius, in strategy or anywhere, lies in self-control, self-mastery, presence of mind, fluidity of thought.”
–Robert Greene
THE FIVE KEY ELEMENTS OF PRESENCE
- Your energy field. Your energy field—sometimes called your “aura”—is made up of vibrational waves that transmit from your body into the space around you.
- Your energetic system. The core of this system comprises seven centres, or chakras, which are ranged along the spine from the base of the tailbone to the top of the skull.
- Movement and body language. How you move and hold your body plays a significant role in the energy you transmit to other people.
- Vibrational frequency. Energetic practices such as chanting help you project an energy of calm even in times of crisis.
- Energetic rituals. Meaningful rituals focus our minds, cleanse our spirits, calm our emotions, and send support to others around us.
Here are a series of role-playing exercises you can undertake—on your own or with others—to practise embodying your presence and controlling your energetic vibrations.
Solitary role-play
- Active body/mind/spirit meditation
This first exercise can be done anywhere and at any time, whether you’re waiting in line for coffee or taking a long walk in nature. It is best to do this role-play standing up because it is all about creating positive energy in your body and role-playing how it feels to be completely present.
Take a few deep breaths in through your nostrils, holding the air in your belly and then letting it out through your mouth. Then, continue breathing normally but mindfully. With each breath in, feel yourself getting stronger and more energised. And with each breath out, focus on letting go of all your anxiety and doubt.
If you only have a moment or two, deliberately expand your ribs and sternum as you breathe, opening up your heart space. Picture your heart radiating love and light from your chest, and imagine that light filling the space where you’re standing. Feel the infinite power of spirit radiating from you. Finally, allow your facial muscles to adjust so that your expression projects this gentle yet powerful feeling of being one with everything.
On longer walks, see how long you can maintain this feeling. Notice how the more you practise, the longer the feeling lasts. Your ultimate goal is to be able to return to this feeling frequently throughout your day.
You may find others will look at you while you are doing this role-play. They may stare at or even approach you because, whether they are conscious of it or not, they are sensing the positive energy you radiate.
- Open Your Eyes
This second role-play exercise is best done in crowded rooms, shopping malls, or parties … anywhere lots of people are gathered. The purpose of this exercise is to augment your positive energy by allowing others to feel your energetic presence.
First, focus all your awareness on your heart. Feel all the love and courage that is there. As you do so, you’ll feel your focus shift from the thoughts in your head to the feelings in your body.
Close or un-focus your eyes for a moment and allow these feelings to spread throughout your body, imagining them as bright golden light coursing through your veins and blazing out through the pores in your skin.
Now, open or refocus your eyes. Open them slightly wider than you normally would. Soften all the muscles around your eyes, and gaze around the room, allowing anyone who looks at you to see into your eyes and down into your heart.
You will be astonished how many people will feel drawn to you while you are exuding this presence.
Have fun with this. When someone gets “hooked,” you can decide whether to break eye contact and continue to gaze around the room or give them a smile and let them approach you.
PARTNER AND GROUP ROLE-PLAY
Start off performing these role-play exercises with someone you know and trust until you get comfortable doing them. As in the earlier role-play exercises, at the conclusion of the exercise, ask for feedback and then adjust your responses accordingly.
Later, you can start doing these exercises with other people in your ecosystem.
- Aura Gazing
Sit or stand facing the other person. Both of you should start by focusing on being completely detached from each other, as well as from your own feelings and thoughts. Just be as bland and “empty” as you can possibly be as you gaze at each other for about 30 seconds.
Un-focus your eyes and notice what the other person’s energetic aura (or lack of it) looks and feels like.
Then, close your eyes for a full minute. While your eyes are closed, fill your body with as much positive and loving energy as you can. Feel all seven of your chakras spinning at full speed, radiating light, love, and powerful energy through your entire body.
Feel your facial muscles soften, especially the muscles around your eyes and lips. Feel your chest open up. Feel your palms and arms open up and face forward. Feel the light radiating out of you towards the other person. Feel your energy reaching out to them, not to embrace them but to energise them, as though you are seeing the very best version of them.
After a minute, one of you will gently say, “And open,” which is the signal for you to slowly and gently open your eyes. As you open your eyes, keep them un-focused. Your aim here will be to “see without seeing,” as you notice the other person’s aura and the energy surrounding their body.
After a while, come back to being fully present and share with the other person what you saw and felt. Describe the difference you perceived in the other person’s energy field before and after the process. Then, have them share back their perceptions with you.
- Body-Language Feedback
With a partner or in a group, you can role-play a number of different emotional interactions. First, in advance, decide who is going to embody which emotion. For example, one of you might pretend to be angry while the other pretends to be afraid or upset. Or, one of you might pretend to be absolutely confident while the other pretends to be timid or afraid.
After each session, which need only be a minute or two, give each other feedback on two experiences: First, how did it feel in your body to enact that emotion? And second, how did the other person perceive you while you were experiencing that emotion?
Then move on to two more emotions.
By experiencing the emotion and receiving detailed feedback on how you appeared while you were fully present in the emotion, you will gain clear insights into the effect your emotions have on your body language—and therefore your “energetic presence.”
This exercise can be effective with just two people or in a larger group.
- Communication Role-Play
This exercise is similar to Body-Language Feedback, but instead of focusing on body language, you focus on the way you communicate as you are experiencing a range of different emotions. During the role-play, focus not just on the words you use, but the tone, volume, and speed of your speech.
This type of role-play is extremely valuable in learning how you behave in certain situations, as well as the effect your behaviour has on those around you. Again, accurate feedback at the end of the process helps you understand the link between what you say and how you say it—and how others respond to you.
There are any number of role-play exercises that will increase your level of self-awareness and help you understand how you come across to others. Everyone is unique, so some of these role-plays may work better for you than they do for others. The key here is to discover which exercises suit you best. Then, using these exercises, in tandem with ongoing feedback and consultation, we can analyse your results and ensure you are getting the results you want.
